The worst place I've ever been stabbed. Doctors call it a sucking chest wound. DO NOT PULL THE KNIFE OUT OF THE WOUND. Not until you have alcohol, Duct Tape,a plastic bag, and sterile cloth. As soon as you pull the knife out, tou won't be able to breathe. You will not regain the ability to breathe until you make that hole airtight. sterilize the bag in alcohol. Wrap the blade around the entry point with the cloth. Now hold the cloth with one hand and the knife with the other. Press the cloth into your chest while pulling the knife out with the oher. Keep pressure on the cloth. When the knife is out, hold the cloth in place with the tape. Now tape the bag over it to create the seal. You will be coughing blood if a lung is punctured. Either way, YOU NEED A DOCTOR.

Human Lungs are made up of millions of air bubbles called alveoli. The rib cage gives shape and support to the lungs. Between the rib cage and the lung tissue there is a fluid layer which allows the lungs to expand and contract without friction and pain. This fluid is called synovial fluid.

In a condition known a pleuritis the pleura becomes inflammed. This causes pain upon inspiration. When lung tissue is punctured air enters the potential space and the lung collapses. This condition is called pneumothorax i.e. air in the lung(s). If only one lung has collapsed then the sternum will shift toward the other side and the person will experience laboured breathing. The shift of the sternum is called mediaternal shift. If both lungs collapse the injury may prove to be fatal as the lungs lose the ability to provide sufficient oxygen to the vital organs.

Pyothorax is the condition when there is pus in the potential space. Hemothorax is the presence of blood in the potenital space.

In the hospital situation a collapsed lung can be reinflated by inserting a heimleih's valve or an underwater Seal drain. Once the lung has reached it's natural size the UWSD is removed. Removal of the underwater seal drain tube requires special precautions to prevent re-entry of air. Sometimes, despite all precautions air may enter the lung and the removal of air will have to be done again.

Your chest cavity is like a vacuum and your lung is like a balloon. The muscles of your chest wall and diaphragm increase the space inside the chest wall every time to take a breath. As such the vacuum increases from the additional space and your lung expands to fill that space, in doing so it pulls in more air.

Take a second to visualize that because there's really no easier way to explain it.

Your lung is more elastic then you might think. When the knife goes through your chest wall and your lung, two things happen. One the vacuum of the chest wall is broken so neither lung needs to increase in size when you take a breath. Two the lung has a hole in it so it can shrink from it's own elasticity, dumping all of that air into the chest wall.
