T4 stands for the 4th vertebra of the thoracic vertebrae.

There are 3 major sections of the spinal cord.

The first one is Cervical, it numbers from C1 to C7.

The second one is Thoracic, it numbers from T1 to T12.

The third one is Lumbar, it numbers from L1 to L5.

When you give the abbreviation of the vertebra that you want to talk about, you always give the first letter of the section (C/T/L), then a number after the letter. The number represents the position of the vertebra in that section.

Here is good way to remember how many bones there are in each section:

You eat breakfast at 7 am, lunch at 12 pm, and dinner at 5 pm.

From top to bottom, you have 7 bones in the cervical vertebrae; 12 in lumber vertebrae; 5 in lumbar.
