The upper number is too high. It should be about 120/80.

If I may add to the above, most doctors will agree that 148/84 is quite high at any age - in fact age should have little to do with optimal blood pressure.

If your BP is this high all the time (not just when excercising or under stress) you need to look for a cause (or causes) and try to correct it (them).

If you are overweight, lose it. Get off the caffeine (coffee, tea, coke, seven-up). STOP SMOKING! Get some exercise - walk, bike, play tennis, swim - something everyday. Stop using salt altogether; there is much more than enough salt in the processed foods we eat to satisfy nutritional requirements - the rest just goes to help restrict arteries, and once you find out what food really tastes like you will never miss the salt...in fact, you will probably find it disgusting (which it is).

Above all, if you have constant blood pressure at 148/84, see a doctor. You are just at the upper limit of "normal" now, but that means the next level - a short step - is "not normal".
