High blood pressure is anything over 140/90

Pre-hypertension is a reading between this and 120/80

Normal blood pressure is a reading under 120/80

The lower number is called the diastolic pressure.

If your diastolic is over 90 (which yours is) OR the systolic is over 140 (or both) then you are diagnosed with hypertension. BUT . . .

The diagnosis is NOT made on one reading alone as blood pressure fluctuates. Not only that, many people have blood pressure that rises only when they go to the doctors.

So, it is recommended that people have at least three readings to give you a more accurate picture. A good automatic home monitor gives excellent results and you can take many more readings to get a good picture over a period of time - this information will help your doctor decide what is best for you.

If this turns out to be an unusual reading and you are not hypertensive, the chances are you are getting close - so treat this as a warning and start making changes to keep your pressure down and avoid the need for drugs.

All the best.

What do the 2 numbers in blood pressure represent?

Why blood pressure is expressed with two number?

When a blood vessel (like an elastic pipe) is empty there is no pressure on its wall. When there is blood flowing in a blood vessel it exerts pressure on the walls of the blood vessel (pipe). This is the basal pressure called the Diastolic pressure (The lower of the two numbers). When the heart pumps blood it drives the blood with force and this exerts higher pressure on the walls of the blood vessel. This is called the Systolic pressure, the higher number in the blood pressure measurement. Thus, Blood Pressure of 120/70 means the systolic pressure is 120 and the diastolic pressure is 70.

What is the name of the blood pressure measuered when the ventricles relax?

What blood pressure is the force of blood on the?

The blood pressure is the pressure in the arteries created by the large quantity of blood circulating in them. The number on the top is the systolic blood pressure and the number on the bottom is the diastolic blood pressure. The systolic BP is the pressure in the arteries right when the blood is pumped out of the heart, therefore the pressure is bigger. The diastolic BP is the pressure in the arteries after the blood has been pumped out and before the next heart contraction. At this moment, the heart is relaxed and the pressure is much lower.

The first and higher number is called systolic pressure. It is the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart beats. The second and lower number is called the diastolic pressure. It is the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart is resting between beats.

What is blood pressure 148 over 83 mean?

The first number is your systolic pressure, which is the pressure when your heart is contracting and pumping blood out. The second, lower number is your diastolic pressure, which is the blood pressure when your heart is relaxing and filling up with blood, not pushing any blood out. I think you've figured it out by now...blood being pushed out will be at a higher pressure, hence the higher first number :)
