Only if the swollen tonsils and sore throat are caused by a bacterial infection. Antibiotics (such as Amoxicillin) can not and will not have any effect whatsoever on viral infections. This is why people cannot and should not treat themselves with antibiotics. Get an accurate diagnosis from a doctor.

Amoxicillin is not good drug for strep throat. Strep throat is caused by gram positive cocci. Penicillin is very effective or the same. Amoxicillin is manufactured from penicillin to give more effect on gram negative bacilli at the cost of it's efficacy against gram positive cocci. So you spend more to get less efficacy.
