There are a couple of steps in the process of funding childhood cancer research efforts. The first stage of research is typically funded by private investors or private foundations. One example is the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, an organization that independently funds research on pediatric cancer. These first stage researchers typically test in a laboratory and, given a successful track record, are advanced to conducting tests of their solutions on children in very small numbers. The second stage of the research is a clinical trial where the solutions that worked well in the earlier stage are made available to a much larger population of children with cancer. The second stage of research is typically funded by the U.S. government through the National Institutes of Health. Two steps - first privately and second by the U.S. government. Incidentally, this points out the significant impact of philanthropy on childhood cancer. Without generous donors and foundations to fund the first stage research the process is much less efficient and effective in the treatment of kids with cancer.
