Yes, this is quite common. The cervix has a lot of blood flowing into it towards the end of pregnancy and sometimes just ouching it may make the spot. The brownish discharge is possibly a little of the mucus plug which has been disturbed by the examination. Unless you have fresh bright redblood I wouldn't worry.

Unfortunately only a blood test can answer this accurately at this stage. Your cervix will be soft and open during vaginal discharge and you may be pregnant. Although I can't really improve on TrishaR's answer I'll add that a white discharge is also symptomatic of an STD. It's a definite and inescapable symptom of gonorrhea for males, and sometimes for women. (Unfortunately women may be asymptomatic until the disease has progressed to a point where it could cause damage to the reproductive system or other problems related to undiagnosed long term infections, i.e. endocarditis) I don't want to alarm anyone and pregnant women will indeed have occasional unusual discharges, (it's nature's way of housekeeping so to speak) but for my peace of mind I'd see to it that (my family member or close friend/confidante) was examined ASAP. (I've dealt with these issues with family and friends and the sooner they were examined the sooner they stopped worrying)
