yes, it is, your lungs are slowing failing and you are forced to try and breath however way possible. it is even more painful underwater because after about 4 minutes you start to try and suck in the water for air but instead in it goes in to your lungs (yea, that hurts) suffocating in your sleep is not painful because you dont wake up until your heart fails the best way to make suffocating less painful?...Dont get your self into anything that may ask for that!
