I searched and couldn't find any evidence supporting this claim. An earlier answer cited several websites purported to be studies confirming the link, but only two of the four cited even mentioned copper in their abstract, and they were concerned with something called Wilson's Disease, which is not cancer but rather an abnormal retention of copper in tissues. It's hardly surprising that a study of a disease having to do with abnormal copper levels would mention copper.

So, while I would hesitate to say that it's impossible for copper to cause cancer, I can say that if there are any studies showing a link, they're rather difficult to find, while in contrast it's easy to find studies showing that certain copper compounds may be useful in treating cancer.
