There are no studies for the synthetic chemicals used in these 'legal herbs'. The US government recently banned a few of them but the producers held out on about half the known synthetics and never released them until the ban was first attempted in December. So now that there is a ban, there is a whole new line of products. It seems likely these chemicals have similar characteristics as THC, but no one knows the true answer to your question yet.
