No.
There are three different types of Down syndrome: Standard Trisomy 21, Translocation, and Mosaicism. Standard Trisomy 21 is when the extra chromosome 21 comes from either the egg or sperm cell. Between 90% and 95% of all Down syndrome is Standard Trisomy 21.
No " following, but a condition such as trisomy 21, Downs syndrome, is caused by nondisjuction. The chromosomes fail to separate properly and one child is left with an extra chromosome number 21. The potetial other children that could have been born of this nondijuction event, those with only one chromosome 21, are not viable.
Down Syndrome is caused by extra genetic material on Chromosome 21. About half of the children of people who have Down Syndrome are born with Down Syndrome themselves. See the Related Linksbelow to view an article about the genetics of Down Syndrome.
The only genotype to cause Klinefelter's syndrome is XXY.
Well there only could be one answer, Down syndrome.
no and waverer some kids have down syndrome
No, almost all males with Down Syndrome are unable to have children. There have only been three recorded cases of Down Syndrome fathers
No. This is only a human trait.
No. This is only a human trait.
You can not treat the syndrome itself, only the physical complications that comes with it.
No. Down's is only one of millions of reasons to become retarded. While it used to be thought that only children with Down's were the only ones who were mentally retarded, it is now known that Down syndrome is only one of the hundreds of known causes of a child being mentally retarded. It's even been documented that one-third of the children who are mentally retarded have no known cause. Two other major known causes are Fragile X and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder. Like Down syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome is a chromosome abnormality. However, FASD is not a chromosome abnormality. FASD is the only preventable -- 100% preventable -- cause of mental retardation. It is also the only one that is 100% untreatable. It's actually been estimated that FASD affects 40,000 infants each year. That is more than Spina Bifida, Down syndrome and Muscular Dystrophy combined. Lots of research is being done endlessly -- with parental education being the most important.
No, Down's syndrome is only a human genetic disorder. Those with the disorder have an extra chromosome. Raccoons do not get this particular genetic disorder.
All 3 conditions occur when non disjunction occurs in meiosis of the parent when they are producing gametes (egg or sperm). In normal meiosis, each parent gamete has 1 copy of each of the 22 somatic chromosomes and 1 sex chromosome. Non-disjunction occurs when 2 chromosomes go to one gamete and 0 go to the other. Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome) is when the zygote has 3 copies (instead of 2) of chromosome 21. Klinefelter Syndrome (47 XXY) is when the zygote has 2 X chromosomes and one Y (a normal male is XY and a normal female is XX). Since they do have the Y chromosome, they are phenotypically (physically) male. Turner syndrome (45 X) is when the zygote has only 1 sex chromosome (X chromosome). They are phenotypically male.
