It is edible in small quantities, and can be used as an intestinal lubricant or laxative. But petroleum jelly (that didn't meet refining standards) was banned by the European Union because of carcinogen contamination that was linked to cancer.

It is not possible to moisturize your skin with petroleum jelly products since it cannot penetrate into the skin. The best moisturizer for soothing your skin is aloe vera. There are many organic Skin Care products that uses aloe vera as the primary component.

Petroleum jelly soothes, protects, and heals dry skin or skin repeatedly exposed to cold or to water. However, some people dislike the fact it is greasy. But the greasiness can be contained by 1. applying in small amounts or 2. wearing socks or white gloves. Socks can also be put over hands at night.

The one risk with petroleum jelly is that it should NOT be inserted into the nostrils or into the ears. In the nose, small globules can be inhaled, leading to pockets of infection in the lungs. In the ears, it can congeal with normal ear wax, making it harder to remove the wax and making it hard to hear while the blockage is in place.

I think there are better creams that would allow your pores to breathe and which would not be as sticky. That said, my mother always had me use zinc oxide for my acne--white face!
