Adding vitamin D to the diet usually helps. It hardly occurs in developed countries where food is varied and vitamin rich. In less developed countries, the lack of vitamin D caused by a long period of (vitamin D deficient) breastfeeding, plus a dark skin that tends to block the vitalin D through sun light make rickets a more common occurrence there.
