Renal (kidney) failure is very common with cats - three times more so than with dogs.
The causes for kidney failure can be so many. What causes kidney failure is still not understood in some cases. Kidney failure in a person can occur at any age and if it is diagnosed early, chances are damage can be arrested. In many cases of kidney failure where early treatment is given, the prognosis for full recovery from the disease is excellent. Chronic kidney failure appears more common in geriatric dogs than cats and occasionally it is documented in species such as rabbits, birds, reptiles etc. Damage is usually irreversible but the severability of the disease can be temporarily modulated with careful medical and dietary controls. Hope this helps.

Chronic renal failure (CRF) is a progressive disorder most commonly associated with older dogs in which the kidneys slowly lose the ability to concentrate urine and eliminate wastes. The disease is associated with irreversible changes to the kidney structure, such as scarring and loss of nephrons, the functional units of the kidney. Dogs over 7 years of age are more likely to be diagnosed with chronic renal failure. Certain dog breeds (such as the basenji, beagle, Bedlington Terrier, Bernese mountain dog, bull terrier, cairn terrier, Chinese shar-pei, Chow Chow, cocker spaniel, Doberman pinscher, golden retriever, keeshond, Lhasa Apso, Newfoundland, Norwegian elkhound, Pembroke Welsh corgi, Rottweiler, Samoyed, Shih Tzu, soft-coated wheaten terrier and standard poodle) are predisposed to developing renal failure due to inherited or familial disorders. Males and females are equally affected.
