Synesthesia is a condition in which one sense (for example, hearing) is simultaneously perceived as if by one or more additional senses such as sight. Another form of synesthesia joins objects such as letters, shapes, numbers or people's names with a sensory perception such as smell, color or flavor. The word synesthesia comes from two Greek words, syn (together) and aisthesis (perception). Therefore, synesthesia literally means "joined perception."

It is a condition, not a disorder. (I have it)

What is it like to have synesthesia?

Synesthesia is a condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another; as in several senses. You don't really "get" synesthesia, you can inherit it genetically from your parents. It is often times passed on through the x chromosome, which explains why women are several times more likely to have it than men. You are most likely born with it and it is very rare. People who have lexical synesthesia see color in letters, numbers, or sounds,(and sometimes even in all three or just two). I learned a lot about it from " A Mango-Shaped Space" by Wendy Mass. This book is great, try it!

How do you cure Synesthesia?

You can't just take medicine and wake up the next morning synesthesia-free, but if you go through some kind of traumatic event (e.g. a car accident?) it might disappear temporarily or, if the event is EXTREMELY traumatic, permanently.
