Autism is a neurological difference that people are born with, it effects autistic people their entire lives. Autistic people may be more severely effected as children but as they grow-up they learn to manage their autism a little better, wheras lack of support means autistic people can be more severely effected as they start to enter old age.

Is childhood disintegrative disorder a form of autism?

Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD) has several characteristics of autism involving developmental regression in communication and motor skills, but doesn't share the exact same framework of autism. CDD represents a much more drastic loss of skills, and occurs at an older age than autism. Classic autism typically occurs between 15-30 months of age, when kids learn to speak, walk, and eat with utensils. CDD typically doesn't occur until 3-4 years of age, thus affected kids may have been toilet trained, and learned everything they should up to that age, and then their developmental trajectories suddenly stop and reverse cycle, going all the way back to infantilism;diapers, nonveral, etc. CDD is much more related to profound mental retardation than typical autism. It's also much less common than autism. Autism affects about 1 in 150 children, and CDD affects about 1 in 100,000 children.

What age can get autism?

Autism is a condition that is present from birth although it is not normally recognised until around the age of 3. This is because it is mainly a social disorder and people do not really mix with other people until around the age of 3. In some people, it is not caught until later on in childhood You don't 'get' autism, in the sense that you develop it or catch it. Rather you are born with it. Autism expresses itself in language processing and social behaviour disfunctions, which don't really tend to be obvious until children are of the age when they are supposed to be developing language and a capacity to relate to others. For example, some children with autism don't begin to speak until late, although when they do start, they are sometimes as articulate as the rest of their age group. Temple Grandin is an example of a person with autism who didn't start talking until relatively late (3 and a 1/2 - before that, she mainly screamed) but has become highly articulate and holds a PhD.
