Let me put it like this, a hip replacement reduces pain in the hip like an extraction relieves pain of a toothache. This was the first and only time I had to be hospitalized, 3 days total, and walking the day after surgery was less painful than the day before surgery. Do not hesitate because of anticipaion of pain, I had NONE! The whole thing was amazingly pain free. The most pain I felt was the aching muscles given to me by the physical therapist(s). They practiced "tough love" I guess! I was 48yrs. old at the time of surgery. Seven years later, I can hardly tell anything happened. Unbelievable!

Yes. The doctor is cutting into your body and taking out your bone and replacing it with a foreign substance. It is surgery! You will be sore and need to take six weeks to three months recovery time. But it is less painful than the bone disorder that you are living with at the moment. And the pain does eventually go away, something that the osteoarthritis doesn't.
