Let me put it like this, a hip replacement reduces pain in the hip like an extraction relieves pain of a toothache. This was the first and only time I had to be hospitalized, 3 days total, and walking the day after surgery was less painful than the day before surgery. Do not hesitate because of anticipaion of pain, I had NONE! The whole thing was amazingly pain free. The most pain I felt was the aching muscles given to me by the physical therapist(s). They practiced "tough love" I guess! I was 48yrs. old at the time of surgery. Seven years later, I can hardly tell anything happened. Unbelievable!

As the user above has posted having a hip replacemnt takes away all the pain that once was there by replacing the bad joint. But did you know there are alternatives to Total Hip Replacements, alternatives that are aimed at Young, Active patients who want there old, pain-free lifestyle back!

An alternative to a traditional total hip replacement is Hip Resurfacing. The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) was pioneered in 1997 by Derek McMinn. The BHR currently has success rates as high as 97% after 13 years which is incredible compared to the statistics of total hip replacements.

The BHR works by resurfacing the Femoral head and fitting a metal, not plastic as used in Total Hip Replacements, acetabular component (socket). This Metal on Metal implant has significantly lower wear than Metal on Plastic which is so commonly used.

It is a bone conserving surgical procedure, which means in the future should a patient require revision surgery this is much easier than if the original procedure was a total hip replacement. There is no reason why patients should wait until they hit 60-65 before having a total hip replacement - if the hip is giving you pain and discomfort then resurfacing could be you. Many local doctors and GPs will tell you to sit tight and wait until you are a suitable patient for a total hip replacement. The BHR has FDA approval in the US and has over 13 years of analysed data showing high success rates!

The BHR is ideal for young active patients, who wish to get back to their previous active lifestyle. See the McMinn Centre website for more details!
