Wife's colon now has a hole from removal of large tumor in all areas of the pelvic area. It's not colon cancer just a hole in removal. Doctor wants to do a colostomy and says it will be pernament because of the location and 'thiness'. We want to know if it could be catched, or reversed or another option.

Can a person with a colostomy use suppositories?

A person with a colostomy typically cannot use suppositories effectively, as the rectum is bypassed and the stool is collected in the colostomy bag. Suppositories are designed to deliver medication to the rectum, which may no longer function properly after colostomy surgery. However, individuals should consult their healthcare provider for tailored advice and alternative methods for managing their health needs.

Can you give a Tylenol suppository via colostomy in a colostomy patient?

You can give medications thru a colostomy, but if they still have a patent anus and rectal mucosa it is more appropriate to give a medication like tylenol via that route as the medication is absorbed by the rectal mucosa to take effect systemically. Medications for bowel regimen like an enema should be given thru the colostomy, as this the direct route of the stool in a patient with a stool diverting colostomy

What happens when you swallow a cherry pit and you have a colostomy?

The cherry pit will pass through your intestines faster than if you didn't have a colostomy (just because of the surgical shortening of the bowel with a colostomy). Unless you have bowel disease that would be irritated or exacerbated by the cherry pit (like diverticulosis), it should pass through and into your bag, like all other digestive wastes, without problems. Check with your health care professional to see if you have any compounding factors with the particular condition that necessitated your colostomy to be sure.
