All type of pain that does not go away should be examined closer by a professional. Most likely, however, you have got a small injury:

You may have broken a rib-bone, got a tissue injury by a hit or over-stretched some muscles. Your muscles may also be worn because of bad positions when sitting and sleeping, or suffer from lack of use. You may also suffer from muscular tension due to nervous factors.

Try to find the exact spot by feeling with your fingers. Also swing your arms all possible ways to see if that also makes pain and to find the spot.

Could merely be Pleurosis, or an inflamation of the pleural membrane surrounding your heart and lungs, which is easily treatable with anti-inflammatories. Check with your doctor for a true medical diagnosis (which this is not).

Answer: You are not hurting yurself intentionally, but you are just stretching your rib cage outward more than your body has grown into. Taking too deep or sudden of breaths expand your lungs which in turn expand your ribs. When this happens, your ribs pull away from their connecting spots which are joined at the sternum (chest plate) and the vertebrae (back bone, spine).
