A state of mind which is psychotic is not relative to any one disorder....it can be attributed to any number of things, such as grief, trauma, or possible side effects to certain medications, and some other factors such as a hallucination to a drug, paranoid thoughts that may come from a mental disorder, and really a lot of things.
Absolutely. Type 1 Bipolar Affective Disorder (what one would classically call "manic-depression") at its most severe can cause psychotic symptoms of all sorts, particularly in the manic phase. Delusions of grandeur and delusions of persecution are common psychotic features associated with the manic phase of type 1 Bipolar disorder. Delusional thinking alone, in fact, is far more common as a psychotic feature when psychotic features are present, though frank hallucinations can also occur in the most severe cases. If left untreated in severe manias this may progress to hallucinatory experiences particularly; -auditory hallucinations -olfactory hallucinations Visual hallucinations, more commonly reported among those with true psychotic disorders, are rarer, though they are reported.
Some common features of an economic depression include high levels of unemployment and high levels of foreclosures. The high levels of unemployment are indirectly responsible for many of the foreclosures. Another factor in foreclosures is the expiration of first-time buyer tax credits.
Common features of depression include persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, changes in appetite or weight, sleep disturbances, fatigue or low energy, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty concentrating, and thoughts of death or suicide. Other symptoms may include irritability, physical aches and pains, and social withdrawal.
Unipolar is more common, it's also known as clinical depression or Major Depressive Disorder. Bipolar (specifically Bipolar 1) is much more severe, although both disorders may become severe, Unipolar is still more common.
