For unknown reasons of ankle and foot swelling, it is generally recommended to use a cold compress to reduce inflammation and numb the area. If the swelling persists or worsens, it would be advisable to seek medical advice to determine the underlying cause.
HOT
Cold compress or ice pack (frozen peas or something else similar).
Post cosmetic surgery you should use warm compress. My mother just had a breast reduction and was instructed to use a warm compress. Cold compress is to reduce swelling or inflammation after an injury like a spained ankle. Wish you the best in the healing process.
If you are bitten by a scorpion, you should clean the wound with soap and water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and seek medical attention immediately.
For an elderly person they should consider vertebroplasty where an injection of filler retains the shape of the verteba. For many it is rest and pain relief
Do not remove it when it is swollen. You can cause tiny tears in your skin, which can increase swelling even further, and cause infection. To relieve the swelling, take an Ibuprofen, and put a warm compress over the piercing. These two combined should bring down the swelling enough to where you can take the jewelry out. Good luck!
I have just learned that if you have an infection you should NOT use heat. The reason being is that it draws the infection out, and encourages it to spread. Cold is the way to go if you are going to use a compress (although it may be difficult. I know that a warm compress has helped me more than a cold compress.)
Take an antipyretic such as ibuprofen and place some ice on the site. Then relax for a few hours.
Applying ice after a cortisone injection can help reduce swelling and pain. Heat is not recommended immediately after the injection as it may increase swelling. Heat therapy can be used after the first 24 hours to help relax tight muscles and increase blood flow to the area.
Hot compress should be use 5-10mins. It should alternately do with the cold compress for a better result.
You should rest, elevate the affected leg, apply ice, and compress the area with a bandage to reduce swelling. If the pain and swelling persist or worsen, seek medical attention to rule out any serious injuries like a fracture or muscle tear.
