Were autistic children mistaken as deaf?

Yes, I believe this happened over the years that most autistic children because of not responding to their names or certain sounds like clapping, conversations, shouts and such that they were mistaken as deaf children. Reason they don't react to certain sounds or people because of the sounds all around them-even though they don't seem too loud and because most autistic people are very uncomfortable with eye contact. Some deaf people can be autistic also.

There were some cases children who reach a stage of autism have been mistaken by parents or teachers that they were deaf or hard-of-hearing. Most autistic individuals have sensitive hearing. And even during high-pitched sounds, some people with autism might cover their ears. When a person approaches them and they don't respond-they might mistaken them as deaf. When a child reaches the early stages of autism and becomes unresponsive, parents might mistaken their child as deaf. So if you basically start realizing that an autistic child is not deaf- like for example- if they react to certain sounds. They don't use sign language to communicate with other people and don't wear hearing aids- they can still hear but can't react because of the sounds all around them.
