It is most likely that fruit bats are the natural reservoirs of ebola virus (EBOV) and infected non-human primates like monkeys. Eating non-human primates, and even bats, as bushmeat which is contaminated with the virus can prove to be very lethal for the victim.

It is not known what animal actually carries the virus. Though the virus has been found in monkeys, to say that a monkey carries the virus would be the same as saying humans carry the virus. Seeing that the survival rate of a human infected with Ebola Zaire is around 10%, one would not imagine a human being a good "carrier".

Fruit bats were probably the animals that gave Ebola to humans.
In the small village of Meliandou, in Guinea, stood a tall, hollowed-out tree where children loved to play. But thousands of bats lived in the tree, and one toddler, a 2-year-old named Emile Ouamouno, may have contracted Ebola from playing there.
He died of Ebola and is considered patient zero (the first).
