My son had Perthes. Pain may be felt in the knee as referred pain, that's why my son went misdiagnosed so long, they kept x-raying his knee. Age of onset is typically between 5-12, the younger the better. At first typically an intermittant limp. The other reason it goes misdiagnosed, since the limp comes and goes in the beginning, docs typically see them walking normal. They also lose range of motion. My son began to fall down a lot, whereas before that he was very well balanced and athletic.
