Anxiety has been considered the most common leading cause to autophobia. It is also believed that if someone is spending time with friends and family for all of their spare time, they may become fearful of being alone because they would rarely have time to themselves. Also, if someone starts to think negatively of themselves, there is a chance that they would develop autophobia and believe that no one loves them or ever will love them.

Other causes may be childhood abuse, abandonment by a parent or even the sudden loss of a parent.
