Autistic children tend to perform better when mainstreamed, although it takes time to adjust and they may need support (thus where Autism units come in) they can equal or even outperform their neurotypical peers in the right learning environment. Often when put into special education programs Autistic people aren't given the stimulation they need to improve their learning and they don't gain social skills as they would if mainstreamed.

Can autistic children go to normal schools?

Yes, autistic children can be taught in mainstream schools. Most autistic children are likely to be mainstreamed, one reason being that autistic children thrive in mainstream school when they're allowed to learn and interact with their neurotypical peers. Often in special education autistic children aren't challenged enough, this is true in mainstream schools too but worse in special education.

Should students with Asperger's Syndrome be homeschooled or go to public schools?

Public schools. The more social situations they encounter, the more used to them they will become. You dont want to keep your child at home for years, and them expect them to walk out into the world and be fine.

Why were native American children sent to Indian schools?

Native American children were sent to Indian schools primarily as part of a broader policy aimed at assimilation into Euro-American culture. These institutions sought to erase Indigenous identities, languages, and traditions, promoting Western values and lifestyles instead. The underlying belief was that this would "civilize" Native populations and integrate them into mainstream American society. Often, children were forcibly removed from their families and communities, facing harsh conditions and strict discipline in these schools.

How many autistic Amish are there?

Autism is a spectrum. It's like asking "How many restaurants serve coffee that isn't hot?" A TSS who worked with autistic children in Lancaster County got upset when that Washington newspaper asserted that autism was unknown among the Amish. It's not. It is diagnosed less often, she admitted, but that's because, in her opinion, the Amish lifestyle is less stressful for kids. Many autistic kids are terribly upset by loud and busy environments. There's also a financial inventive for schools to get an autism diagnoses for kids that, in Amish schools, are simply considered, "all boy." It's probably as common in the Amish as in English populations.
