Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is both an affective (mood) disorder and an impulse control disorder. It's characterized by sudden episodes of extreme aggression that are either triggered by minor things that are out of proportion to the aggression or that occur spontaneously for no apparent reason at all.

The impulses associated with the episodes are uncontrollable, and when the mania strikes, it overwhelms all other thoughts. A person experiencing an IED episode will experience racing thoughts and high strength and energy levels during the episodes, in which they rampage for 5-40 minutes, followed by fatigue and possible regret and depression.
