prenatal care is best described as the care of a pregnant woman through a series of doctor visits to a board certified Obstetrician gynecologist related to the health and well being of the woman and her unborn child or fetus throughout the course of the pregnancy. . Dentist, family practitioner ,and an allergist can and should also be included. Your family doctor or a specialist should be monitoring any chronic condition. Special care is needed at this time in many areas to include but not limit to: Diet, Vitamins and supplements, exercise, internal exams and sonograms at the appropriate times and is important to the general health of the baby and its mother.

Prenatal testing may involve a series of tests. Some of which are:

1) Sonogram/Ultrasound, which denotes the baby's heart rate, weight, length, gestational age, and sex;

2) Genetic Testing, which can indicate any genetic type abnormalities;

3) Amniocentesis, a procedure used to diagnose fetal defects in the early second trimester of pregnancy. A sample of the amniotic fluid, is collected through a pregnant woman's abdomen using a needle and syringe. Testing on fetal cells through the sample can reveal many types of genetic disorders, which allows the doctors and parents to make decisions about treatment and intervention.

4) Glucose Tolerance Test - is a blood test that indicates whether the prospective mother has gestational Diabetes.
