There are no dangers for the mother. Rh is a factor in blood, if you have the Rh factor you are Rh+. If not you are Rh-. If an Rh+ mother has an Rh- baby, there is nothing for her to react to, she has the factor. The baby doesn't.

If an Rh- mother carries an Rh+ baby, the mother's body may create antibodies that will cause her body to treat the baby as a foreign tissue. A woman who is Rh- seldom has problems in a first pregnancy, but later pregnancies the Rh antibodies can cause serious complications in the baby before birth and as a newborn. Rh- woman are given Rh immune-globulin shots, Rh immune-globulin acts like a vaccine, preventing the mother's body from producing any potentially dangerous.antibodies.

She must have the injection in the 72 hours following the birth for it to have an effect. Usually she will receive the first injection about half way through the pregnancy. A dose of Rh immune-globulin may also be given if a woman has a miscarriage, bleeding during pregnancy or some prenatal tests that could potentially allow the blood from the fetus to enter the mother's blood stream.

A baby that is Rh+ with an Rh- mother may be severely compromised in the womb and may need a transfusion during the pregnancy and again after birth. Fortunately Rh immune-globulin shots almost completely eliminate the risks.
