Bipolars must always keep their mood in mind when dealing with daily life. If you are depressed, it is hard to motivate yourself to get out of bed and go to work, or to socialize. If you are manic, it is hard to keep from saying or doing impulsive things that will get you into trouble. You need to keep track of things that you know are going to trigger a mood swing, and avoid them or plan ahead to counteract them. Sometimes it is hard to keep taking medication when your mood gets out of control, so you need a system to remind you to do that always. And you need to see a therapist on a regular basis to be sure you are doing everything you can to lead a normal life.
