Sickle cells have an abnormality in the oxygen-carrying protein hemoglobin. Functionally, sickle cells are more rigid than normal red-blood cells. This can result in them getting "stuck" in capillaries because they don't deform as well as normal red-blood cells to allow them to flow through the capillaries.
