The skin is the major organ of the integumentary system. Other parts of the integumentary system in humans include the hair and nails. Integument system is the largest organ of the body. It is derived from Ectoderm of the embryo. This Ectoderm extends up to pharynx via mouth and nose.(you have hairs in the nose.) and part of anal canal. It is very tough structure. It has got three layers. Outer epidermis, middle dermis and inner hypo-dermis. Epidermis have germinal layer. It multiply continuously to give outer layers.(stratum germinatum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucid-um and stratum corneum etc.) Skin has hairs all over body except palm and sole. More so on head, axila, pubic area. A special gland is attached to hair follicle, which isembeddedin dermis to which very small muscle is attached. It secretes oily secretion called as sebum. Bacteria on skin can cause it to give bad odor, in some people.(you can apply concentrated solution of sodium chloride(common salt.) all over body to kill them. Additionally after bath you can apply diluted vinegar(acetic acid and not any other strong one.) for few month to cure it.) You have sweat glands to to lower down temperature in hot climate and one liter/hour may be lost in sweating.(to be replaced by salted water 3 grams/liter.) You have specialized sweat glands in axila, pubic area called apocrine glands. Probably as a secondary sex character to attract opposite sex. Skin contains special protein called as 'keratin' from which nails and hairs are formed. Palm, sole and scalp has specially though structure. It takes about one and half month to replace the outer skin as against gastric mucosa, which takes only three days for replacement. Skin is one of the most important secondary sex character. Physician dealing with skin diseases is called as Dermatologist.
