Food is broken down by enzymes (biological catalysts) into smaller molecules. For example, starch is broken down into sugars which can dissolve, and proteins into amino acids, and lipids (fats) into sugars also. These soluble particles then pass through the lining of the small intestine into the bloodstream, where they are carried to where they are needed.
