WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES

The symptoms of Diabetes are usually first noted as drinking more because of a dry mouth or increased thirst, urinating more, irritability, and feeling fatigued. The symptoms often but not always begin with those and progress to either weight gain or weight loss. If untreated, diabetes can have the common complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis (which can be fatal), diabetic neuropathy (which can cause loss of use of feet and hands), blindness, kidney failure, heart failure, and death.

Sometimes it can simply begin with a sense of not feeling well, lethargy, or tiredness not helped by rest. Every adult should get a fasting blood glucose level check every year (because many people are without symptoms). However, they can unknowingly be causing damage to their body -- vascular, coronary, artery, kidney, and eye damage.

Below is a list of symptoms.
A diabetic may experience some of the symptoms or all of them.

  • Frequent urination
  • Dry mouth (with or without thirst)
  • Increased thirst
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Little or no energy
  • Increased hunger
  • Itching of the skin
  • Genital itching
  • Yeast infections
  • Tingling or numbness of hands/fingers or feet/toes
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Significant weight gain (or weight loss) can occur with type 2 diabetes
  • Blurred Vision
  • Slow healing of cuts and bruises
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Muscle spasms

Sometimes type 2 diabetes can go unnoticed and untreated if the symptoms are not yet present, especially if the person is borderline diabetic.

Occasionally, people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms even though they are unwell. In addition, you do not need to be overweight to develop type 2 diabetes if there is a family history. Type 2 diabetes can sometimes go undetected for years. It's important to get regular medical check-ups. In some countries, such as the UK, many pharmacies offer free blood tests.

If you suspect that you may be diabetic, or borderline diabetic, please consult with your physician or medical adviser as soon as possible.
