Official diagnosis of a manic episode requires the presence of at least three of the following symptoms over a minimum of one week: inflated self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, excessive talking or feeling pressure to talk, racing and/or illogical progression of thought, distractibility, increased physical agitation, or excessive risk-taking behaviors. The symptoms of bipolar depression are the same as is seen in major depressive disorder. These symptoms include sleep disturbances, depressed mood, loss of interest in activities, feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, suicidal ideation, and changes in appetite. To be diagnosed with Bipolar disorder (manic depression) it is necessary to suffer from a manic episode, but not a depressive episode.
