There are 4 curvatures of the spine: cervical,thoracic, lumbar, and sacral. During embryogenesis the spine is all curved in one direction, like the letter C with your feet and head next to each other. A cervical and lumbar curvatures are formed and the other two, sacral and thoracic, occur just as a continuation of the curvature that existed before. The cervical curvature exists so that our heads can be upright as opposed to pointing to the floor. The lumbar curvature occurs so that we can stand upright and walk on two legs. This curvature allows the weight of the body to placed directly downwards on the sacral spine. Hope that helps
