Triiodothyronine (T3), which is active, and Tetraiodothyronine (T4, also called thyroxine), which is inactive, are produced by the follicular epithelial cells of the thyroid. T3 and T4 affect the metabolic rate. Thyroxin is the main thyroid hormone. Calcitonin is made by the parathyroid glands.
