The heart contraction that is called systole push the blood into the bloodstream through several valves that open and close like a wonderful living pump. But the full process is much more complex.

Blood vessels are used to transport blood from the heart to other areas of the body. The 3 main blood vessels are the Arteries, the veins, and the capillaries. Arteries can be divided into systemic and pulmonery arteries. Pulmonery arteries are part of the pumoneric circulation, which carries deoxygenated blood (blood lacking oxygen) from the heart and to the lungs where it is oxygenated and returned to the heart by a contraction (heart beat). Systemic arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to all other parts of the body, and then returns as deoxygenated blood back to the heart. Veins are used to carry oxygenated blood to all areas of the body, delivering nutrients to tissues. Veins are less muscular than artries, and contain valves which help keep blood flowing to the heart, while arteries (excepting pulmonery arteries) carry blood away.
