When old people lose their hearing, it's called presbyopia. It happens to all people with age, also called age-related hearing loss. It is caused by inner ear wear and tear or trauma which damages or destroys small hair-like follicles which vibrate and turns outside stimuli into sounds we can hear and interpret. This damage can be the result of loud noise, strong vibration and certain medication over a lifetime (think ear buds, loud car stereo and high volume gaming).

This damage is cumulative and it is irreversible; the little hairs, once gone, do not grow back. So if you take better care of your hearing by using ear buffers when attending live concerts (don't stand by the amplifiers), wearing earplugs when working around load machinery and turning the MP3 players down along with other common sense precautions, you can delay hearing loss for many years or equaling important, prevent Tinnitus, a constant ringing in your ears that affects your hearing not to mention sanity.
