What causes a circumcised penis to smell fishy?

Any body part that is not wash regularly can smell. If you didn't wash your armpits or butt, they would smell bad. If you don't wash your penis, it will smell, too. Uncircumcised penises are also more difficult to wash than circumcised penises.

This depends on the age of the child. In infants, toddlers, and young children, odors encountered during diaper changing or bathing are the same for boys and girls and for circumcised and uncircumcised boys. Usually the odor is easily corrected by thoroughly wiping the area between the butt cheeks, between the legs, in any folds of fat or skin, and around the penis and scrotum or vulva.

For uncircumcised boys, the foreskin normally remains tightly covering the head of the penis from birth until sometime between age 3 and age 10, when it will gradually loosen so that the boy can pull back the foreskin on his own. Before the foreskin can be pulled back, it does not need to be cleaned and does not produce an odor. There is no need to wash under the foreskin until the boy can comfortably pull back his foreskin on his own.

When a boy is able to pull back his foreskin, he should be taught to wash his penis during his daily bath or shower, with soap and warm water, just like any other body part, including pulling back the foreskin to was the head of the penis. If an older boy doesn't wash under his foreskin frequently or if an older girl doesn't wash her vulva, odor can develop, but it quickly remedied by normal washing.

If a strange odor persists or is accompanied by a rash or itchy skin, you should see your child's doctor.
