There are a number of possible reasons. These include injuries sustained from exertion like tendinitis, muscle strain, stress fractures. Also there is shin splints which occurs on the front of the lower leg, it is a swelling of the bone.

Also, in children there is what we call growing pains. The rapidly growing bones in some people will cause pain, mostly noticed at night.

In older people, Arthritis or peripheral artery disease can create pain or burning sensations as well.
