The veins through which blood returns from the legs are mostly on the
underside of the legs. Sitting for a prolonged period constricts these veins
and increases the net pressure in them, which is the blood's filtration
pressure less osmotic pressure and tissue turgidity. The excess fluid that is
not returned to the veins is normally returned via the lymph vessels, but
these too are constricted by prolonged sitting. Gravity increases the pooling
in the veins and lymphatics. This can be helped by taking breaks, elevating
and stretching the legs, and placing a cushion on the portion of the chair in
contact with the thighs. Exercise such as cycling can rapidly alleviate the
condition (by using the leg muscles to push out the fluid). If one can't
avoid sitting for a prolonged period, it is best to wear tight socks with
shoes, as they help to counteract the pressure imbalance that causes this.

Dependent edema can also be caused by a number of other more serious
conditions, particularly heart failure and high blood pressure. If you go to
a doctor, you should be examined to rule out such things, but I would
recommend that, particularly if you are in generally good health, that you try
simple solutions first before resorting to drugs or surgery. In their concern
to not miss a potentially serious condition, it is my experience that doctors
will often miss simpler, more benign and easily treated conditions which could
be causing the situation.

In fact, last night I was on the computer, with bare feet, for about two
hours, and I started to notice swelling in my ankles. Pulse was 48 bpm (I do
a lot of cardio) and blood pressure was 107 over 60. No shortness of breath,
cyanosis, etc. Rules out high blood pressure and heart failure. Elevated
feet for awhile, then when I sat down again, put a cushion there. Feet are
fine, problem solved.

What make your menstrual cycle irregular?

The most common causes of irregular cycles are puberty and menopause - when menstrual cycles start it takes time for the body to get into a pattern, and as the reproductive system slows down the cycle starts to become irregular again. Irregular cycles can be a result of hormonal imbalance which may be temporary and mild or may be a symptom of a bigger health problem.
