In post menopausal women, the cervical opening often thickens and may close alltogether. This is called 'cervical stenosis'. This may be caused by scarring from previous endometrial ablations or from growing fibroids which are benign tumors inside the uterus or the uterine wall. Fluid may collect inside the uterus because it cannot travel out of the constricted cervical opening. This is usually detected by ultrasound. Your doctor may request an 'endometrial biopsy' which is a procedure involving gently dilating the cervical opening and removing tissue for examination by a pathologist. The tissue will be examined for cancer cells. Just going through this procedure may be enough to have the fluid drain since the cervix will be opened wide enough for the small biopsy tube. If the fluid, pelvic pain, pressure, or other symptoms are not resolved by this procedure, the next step is a D&C (dilation and curettage) which is the gentle removal of tissue inside the uterus....a more involved procedure.
