What is funny is so subjective, but its an interesting question impossible to answer. What is funny to one person is not funny to another. Some times funny or joy does not involve funny.

Scientist have wired seniors to the brain and measured what part of the brain reacts to different stimulus. I am not sure what part of the brain gets stimulated during a laugh, but it will involve sight or sound or both.
There is also brain chemistry involved, like endorphins which make you feel good. The old saying is laughter is the best medicine. Endorphins make you feel good or happy. When you exercise you release endorphins.

Sorry to the answer below, but laughing is not always joy, it can be fear and nervousness. People can fake laughter or not laugh even at things they find funny. As I said it is complex. True laughing spontaneously can be from many things, even just the sound of others laughing.
