What causes varicose veins?

There are two causes are there for the same probably. One is the pressure of the growing uterus on the abdominal veins. That increase the pressure in the leg veins. So they become tortuous. That is varicose. The other reason is related to increased level of pregnancy hormones. The exact contribution of the both is not known to me. You may ask the lady to sleep on the side to prevent the compression of the abdominal veins. But you can not ask her to maintain that position during the sleep.

A varicose vein is an enlarged, twisted superficial vein. They can occur in almost any part of the body, but mostly seen in the lower leg area. It is caused by incompetent venous valves (valves that do not work well and have a hard time moving the blood back towards the heart). When this happens the blood pools and the veins swell. This can cause pain in the feet, ankles and legs, swelling, and ulcers on the skin.

Varicose veins can be acquired or congenital. They can be caused or aggravated by pregnancy, obesity, and prolonged periods of standing (working in a position that requires you to be on your feet for great lengths of time).
