Rest, Ice up to 3 times daily for no more than 20 minutes with a cloth against your skin to avoid burn. When the acute pain (the sudden pain and spasms) stop, begin a gentle stretching and strength training regimen to strengthen the back, buttocks, abdomen and legs. If you rest too long (I.E. for several days past the loss of the acute pain), it can actually make the stiffness and pain worse.
