What causes your eyes to close?

Trauma or infection/disease. If someone sustains a blow to the eye or the socket area, contusions and edema follow. The bruising and swelling are the result of trauma. If the eye is not injured but is infected or being attacked by disease, swelling is a possible side effect. Either of the two basic conditions should be evaluated by a medical professional. Your sight may be at stake. It's not worth it to wait.

There are facial muscles (levator palpebrae superioris)that keep the eyelids open, and other muscles (orbicularis oculi) that close them loosely when you are not keeping them open. The level of tone in these muscles sometimes means the eyes of some individuals will not close completely unless they voluntarily squeeze them shut.

Several instinctive reactions will cause the eyes to close (blink reflex). They may respond to bright light, a sudden noise, eye irritation, blown dust or pollen, or seeing something that seems about to make contact with the head or body. Peripheral vision will sometimes close the eyes even if the person is not consciously aware of something rapidly approaching. The eyes will almost always close when a person sneezes.

there are many cause for the swelling ,mainly any injury, stress, allergy ,obesity or hyper tention. .

If it's swollen shut, my guess is conjunctivitis (pink eye).
