In order to be classified as having AIDS, there are medical criteria that must be met. The three general criteria are:

  • CD4 count drops to below 200--meaning that the immune system is functioning poorly
  • Viral load increases to levels considered high (this will vary depending on the laboratory performing the blood test and their values)--meaning that the virus is reproducing in high quantities
  • The presence of opportunistic infections--meaning that the body is becoming ill with infections because the immune system is unable to fight them off
