Gravity. The blood drains into your feet and legs, and if your muscles are in poor shape, they do not squeeze all of it back up toward your heart. Also, the longer you have to stand up every day makes it harder to get blood back up out of your feet.

Damage in the back would not be my first choice . . . but it could have put pressure on a major blood vessel. Leg and ankle swelling have more to do with heart disease or diabetes. You should see a doctor, very soon!

You can put ice or heat on your leg, this will help with your swelling.
Elevate the leg, and don't walk a lot. Call 911. The leg could have increased swelling and lead to compartment syndrome, which could in turn lead to amputation.
