Ochsner and DeBakey (actually Dabaghi, a Lebanese name that was Anglicized) noticed, in the 1930's, that almost all of their patients who had lung cancer had been heavy cigarette smokers. They reported their experience at medical conferences and wrote articles about them that were published in medical journals.
Alton Ochsner was an American surgeon and medical researcher, best known for his pioneering work in the field of cancer research and his role in establishing the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, Louisiana. Born in 1906, he significantly contributed to the understanding of the relationship between smoking and lung cancer. Ochsner was also an advocate for public health initiatives and played a crucial role in promoting preventive medicine. His legacy includes the continued influence of the Ochsner Health System, which remains a prominent medical institution.
